Piggie has a surprise for his friend Gerald, but he has to
wait. And waiting is very hard for an elephant. In fact, Gerald almost gives up
and goes home because waiting is so hard. But Piggie is finally able to show
Gerald his surprise, the night sky full of stars. Gerald learns that some
things are worth the wait.
Willems uses comic styled pictures and text to convey just
how difficult it is for Elephant to wait. His use of giant bubble letters and exaggerated
facial expressions show how the characters in the story are feeling and
thinking. The Elephant and Piggie series is perfect for early readers and
struggling readers due to the humorous storylines and simple vocabulary. Just how
well these books relate to young children is amazing. The relationship between
Gerald and Piggie is a wonderful starting point for discussions about
friendship and how to be a good friend.
