Hale, S. (2008). Rapunzel’s
revenge. New York: Bloomsbury.
Rapunzel has been locked in a tower deep in the jungle by the evil Gothel (her supposed mother) who is slowly destroying the land and people all around. The wild west style Rapunzel escapes her tower using her hair as a lasso. Her goal is to reunite with her real mother who is a slave of Gothel. She meets Jack (who once went up a beanstalk) and the two of them work together to end Gothel’s control over all the land and people. They get into many scrapes and Rapunzel usually saves the day. Jack and Rapunzel end up together with a goose named Goldie.
This wild west graphic novel version of Rapunzel, will appeal to fifth grade and higher. With a twist on the classic tale, Rapunzel leaves Prince Charming in woods and heads off to save herself and her mother. This strong female is a very fresh take on a classic tale. The illustrations in the novel bring the characters to life and add depth to the story. The flash backs appear in a sepia tone, helping keep the story flowing smoothly. Young girls may especially enjoy this version of Rapunzel.
