Landry, D. (2007). Skulduggery Pleasant. New York: HarperCollins.

Stephanie Edgley inherited her Uncle Gordons estate in Ireland which triggers her discovering a whole new world of good, evil and unusualpeople”. Skulduggery Pleasant (a skeleton held together by magic) is her Uncles friend and takes Stephanie under his care as she slowly discovers she magical abilities. They work together as detectives with the help of Ghastly Bespoke, China Sorrow and Tanith Low to foil a plot by the evil Serpine to take over the world. The final battle for the Book of Names leaves the heroes and heroines bruised and broken, but ready to continue fighting to save the world.

This fantasy novel is geared for junior high students and is full of twists, turns and a wide range of extraordinary characters that have been dead for hundreds of years. Skulduggery and Stephanie (who changes her name to Valkyrie Cain) fight off evil in the hunt for The Scepter and protecting the world. The creation of a whole underground realm of villains, heroes, and magicians who are centuries old with a wide variety of supernatural powers, would be a great fit for fantasy readers. This is the first book in a series.
