Comic Squad: Recess

Holm, J. & M. (eds.). Comics squad: recess. New York: Random House.

This collection of eight graphic novellas by celebrated authors/illustrators, centers loosely on the theme of school recess. From Jarrett Krosoczka: Lunch Lady is ill and Betty has to serve lunch all by herself on pizza day, the busiest day ever. After an altercation with a giant cheese monster, Betty saves the day. From Eric Wight: There is a cupcake named Jiminy Sprinkles who wins a game of freeze against some vegetables with his frosty superpowers. From Dan SantatEddie and Andrew learn about procrastinating, friendship and how doing the right thing may be tough, but worth it.

This collection would be wonderful book for younger students first exploring the world of graphic novels. With such a variety of styles and characters, many students will seek out more books to explore. The illustrations use only the colors black and orange, giving the book continuity from artist to artist.
