Six of Crows
Bardugo, L.
(2015). Six of crows. New York: Henry
Holt and Company.
Six of Crows, set in the city of Kettledam, is about
six unlikely survivors who come together to pull of the biggest heist ever; one
that if pulled off, could make them rich beyond their imagination. This group
consist of Kaz (the leader), Inej (the spy), Nina (the Heartrender), Jesper (the
sharpshooter), Matthias (the convict), and Wylan (the runaway). As Kaz leads his group of misfits in the quest
for their goal, they overcome their own physical and mental challenges while growing
together as a team. With incredible daring, they break into the Ice Court to
steal the creator of jurda parem, which enhances the magic of
Grishas to epic proportions. They breach the castle and kidnap Kuwei Yul-Bo
(son of the inventor) and are ready to claim their millions when the final
twist occurs. Can Kaz rescue Inej, keep his team together and still claim the
prize?
Six of Crows is a
fantasy novel which tells the story from each of the six main character’s point
of view. Quite a bit of time is spent developing the characters and exploring
what makes them unique. When they finally get to the Ice Court, the action,
adventure and magic start to flow. Each of the characters deal with a variety
of issues such as bisexuality, gambling addiction, disabilities, racism,
learning disabilities, abusive parents, death of family members and being used
as a sex slave. There is eventually acceptance among themselves as all their
hurt and flaws become known. There is a constant underlying theme about power
and control: Who has the power? What is control worth? What will be sacrificed
to get power? This book will be a hit with students who love epic fantasy
novels. This book is a spin-off of some of the author’s previous work and
delves deeper into the world she created.
