It’s Perfectly Normal
Harris,
R. (2009). It’s perfectly normal.
Boston, MA: Candlewick Press.
It’s Perfectly Normal discusses
human sexuality and all its complexities at a level where young teens can
understand and hopefully feel that what they are experiencing (or not
experiencing) is perfectly normal. The book goes into detail using simple, but anatomically
correct, illustrations to ensure there is no misunderstandings about what is
occurring. The book discusses the responsibilities that come with being
sexually active how a certain level of maturity is involved for responsible
sexual contact. The differences between boys and girls is explained in detail
including how each is changed by puberty and the emotions that come with puberty.
The book reflects all the different ways families can be made including
biologically and by adaption. The book also covers birth control, sexually
transmitted diseases, pregnancy and abortion.
It’s Perfectly Normal
is a nonfiction book that has been significantly researched by the author. The
book includes a list of resources and an index. The illustrations are inclusive
of all body shapes, sizes and skin-tones which will help relieve some student’s
anxiety. This guide would be so helpful for those students whose parents feel
uncomfortable sharing this type of information. It will also answer so many of
the questions students have about sexuality. This is such an important aspect
of a teen’s life and misinformation in this area could have unexpected
consequences. Having materials available that discuss the changes that occur
during puberty along with sexuality in clear, simple terms is necessary.
