future. New York: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.
Glory O’Brian’s
History of the Future tells the story of what happens when Glory and her
friend Ellie decide to drink bat remains mixed with beer. It affects each girl
in a unique way that reveals the past history of anyone they see and for Glory,
she sees the future. The future she sees is completely disturbing full of war
and hatred along with women being basically reduced to having no rights. As
Glory graduates from high school, she is wrestling with the fact that her mom
committed suicide when she was four years old. Glory is searching for a
connection with her mother who was also a photographer while trying to discover
if she too will kill herself. She confronts her father who has emotionally shut
down since the death of his wife. Glory and her dad make a break through and
start to make headway in making a positive future for them both.
Glory O’Brian’s
History of the Future is a fantasy novel, that has very realist elements.
The book weaves both together to tell a story of a young girl who needs to
discover who she is and where she wants to go. Glory is fascinated with
photography, like her mom and uses it to escape and to find some connection to
her deceased mother. Glory is wrestling with a friendship of convenience that
is dying and part of letting Ellie go means liking herself more. Glory has to
deal with many sexual issues such as Ellie having several partners and that
Ellie’s mom tried to seduce her dad. As
she sees the future (but not her own) Glory writes it all down in the hopes of somehow
making a difference.
