The War That Saved My Life

The War that Saved My Life

Bradley, K. B. (2015). The war that saved my life. New York: Penguin Random House.

This novel focuses around 11- year-old Ada and her younger brother Jamie who live in pre- World War II London. Ada, who suffers from a club foot has spent her entire life locked in their flat. As the War begins, the children sneak away and become evacuees. They are placed with a woman named Susan who is battling her own demons. It becomes clear that both children, but especially Ada, have suffered horribly at the hands of their Mother. Susan slowly begins to realize the challenges both children face. As the War begins to affect them daily, they all learn to find the rainbow in the darkness.

This book was featured in the library book club this semester. All of the students enjoyed it so much, both boys and girls. The book has opened many doors for discussions about abuse, World War II, physical differences and family. They chose to read the sequel as their next book club selection.
