We're in the Wrong Book

New to the Library!

We’re in the Wrong Book!

Byrne, R. (2015). We’re in the wrong book! New York: Henry Holt & Company.

We’re in the Wrong Book! is another fantastic addition to the library. Two children are walking down the street jumping from one side of the book to the other and they accidently fall into another book. The children go on an adventure through a variety of stories as they search for their book.

This book is an amazing read aloud. The students will be actively engaged as the try to guess where the kids will land next. Then the discussions about where the students “land” are fill with excitement! It is such a great opportunity to discuss different types of books such as counting, comic, history, puzzle and several more. Great book for teaching while the students are having fun.

George

New to the Middle School Library

George

Gino, A. (2015). George. New York: Scholastic.

George is the story of a young boy who feels that inside "he" is really "she". The story is told from George's point of view and tells quite poignantly the struggle she is facing everyday. George's family and classmates still relate to her as a boy, but in George's mind, she is a girl. She is hiding her true self to her family, still struggling with how to tell her mom and her fear of a negative reaction. This story centers around a play, Charlotte's Web, that her grade level is performing and George wants to be Charlotte. Thankfully, George does have a best friend, Kelly, with whom he confides. Kelly agrees to switch roles with him for the school play. This is the pivotal moment in the story as George's family and friends realize who she really is.

George provides a mirror to those students struggling with being transgender and a window for others to build understanding.

There's a Lion in My Cornflakes

New to the Library!

There’s a Lion in my Cornflakes

Robinson, M. (2014). There’s a lion in my cornflakes. New York: Bloombury.

This latest addition to our library is sure to be a hit with the students. There’s a Lion in my Cornflakes tells the story of a brother and sister who order a lion by collecting coupons from cereal boxes. When they finally get their prize in the mail, they are in for a huge surprise. It is not a lion! Several letters, some very angry parents and a change of heart help this set of siblings find the silver lining.

This is picture book would be wonderful for a read aloud. Kids would be actively engaged in making predictions in what would happen next. The illustrations add an extra layer of fun to the story.

Ali’s Story: A Real-Life Account of His Journey from Afghanistan

New to the Library

Ali’s Story: A Real-Life Account of His Journey from Afghanistan

Glynne, A. & Maldonado, S. (2018). Ali’s story: a real-life account of his journey from Afghanistan. North Mankato, Minnesota: Picture Window Books, an imprint of Capstone.

Ali’s Story is a heartbreaking tale of how it feels to be a refugee from a young child’s point of view. The picture book takes the reader through the decision to leave the home country, the flight to a new land and the adjustment that is needed while learning English and making friends. In this story, Ali migrates with his grandmother while his parents are stranded in Afghanistan. The pictures portray just how dark and bleak this time is for this young boy. This book (and the others in the series) would be perfect for teaching empathy along with showing students how other children their age might be living in different countries and circumstances.

This book is part of a new series in the library. Titles include:

Juliane’s Story: A Real-Life Account of her Journey from Zimbabwe
Rachel’s Story: A Real –Life Account of her Journey from Eurasia
Navid’s Story: A Real-Life Account of his Journey from Iran
Hamid’s Story: A Real-Life Account of his Journey from Eritrea
