What is Young Adult Literature?
Textbook Reflection: Chapter 4
Young Adult (YA) literature involves a younger protagonist
that uses a point of view that portrays the adolescence interpretation of
events. The main character goes through a significant change in life where they
have to be highly independent. A YA
novel will show gradual change of a character but not complete growth. These
novels mirror current issues and events. The main character will also
benefit/suffer the consequences of their actions. The setting, time period and
other fully developed characters may be limited. The novel is strongly based on
how youth develop.
As I am reading more and more YA literature, I am so drawn
to this type of book. I can see teens
relating to these types of novels and finding themselves inside the pages. Even
if a teen doesn’t connect to the main character, they can develop empathy for
the characters and what is happening in the novel. These books may start teens
thinking about the world around them and not just the tiny bubble where they
live. Reading novels about kids their own age dealing with issues will help
them form independent thoughts, ideas and opinions. Reading books that they can
relate to may also help them become lifelong readers.
